Sarah Causton, MSW, RSW
As a registered social worker I have had the privilege of working with clients in a number of different settings. After graduating with my Master’s Degree in Social Work from Carleton University I worked as an addiction counsellor in Ottawa, followed by four years as an individual and family counsellor at an Adolescent Mental Health agency in Toronto. Most recently I worked at Family Services of Greater Victoria.
I love working with individuals and families and getting to know their unique stories. It has been my experience that people often have a sense of what they need to do, or change, and in the safety of a skilled, compassionate and non-judgmental relationship they can explore this.
I am experienced in using a number of directive and non-directive approaches, including narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, solutions focussed, mindfulness and attachment based counselling. I do not have one go-to approach but rather work to develop a relationship with my clients and then figure out what will work best for them.
My areas of interest include mental health, parenting challenges, addiction, family transitions, parent-child attachment, self-harming behaviours, stress reduction, and strengthening relationships within one’s community.
I understand that counselling is not a one size fits all service and it requires a good fit between counsellor and client. If you are interested, I would encourage you to set up an initial appointment with me so that we can discuss your needs and my areas of practice.
